Kaiser Gale Force Cutter

Postby KARLO » Sun Mar 02, 2008 3:06 pm

Hi Folks!
I'm new to this forum and would like to mention my boat "CHEERS" a 34' Kaiser Gale Force Cutter hull#14 built in Delaware by John Kaiser aroun 1979-80. She weighs 19500 lbs with a summer's stores on board and full tanks, on a DWL of about 28', and a little over 800 sq ft of canvas including the laundry.
I bought her from Frank Levin of Bristol RI in'05 primarily for summer cruising with my wife and dog. She (the boat) is of slack bilge and slow roll and pitch. Cheers tracks real well, annd has a definite groove on almost all points. The accomodations are tight in a standard two cabin lay-out with the added benefit of pilot berths P&S.
There were only about thirty or so made and there are besides CHEERS only three others that I know of here in New England, "JEWEL" of Harrasekett, "MAGGIE", of York, ME, currently in the Bahamas, and another "CHEERS" currently for sale in CT. And possibly one other that was sold away from VT. Did I say three? That's four!
I'm pretty easy on the whole subject and would be happy to chat w/ anyone contemplating one of these boats. Or especially would like to hear from another Kaiser owner.

Karl,
I am an original owner of a Kaiser Gale Force. It is hull number 1 and was launched in May 76. It is here in Annapolis and has been dormant for quite a long period. I am just starting to go over it and put a lot of things back together.
Do you have a 4-91 Westerbeke or a 4-107? in your boat?
I have a fair bit of knowledge about these boats and know where all the bodies are buried.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

Just noticed your posting. I own Gale Force 34 hull number 4 built in 1974. I purchased her in 1980 from the original owner, Fidia Guastini, who planned and set off for Italy, only to return after a few days and never to try again. We have sailed her up and down the New England coast since 1980, mainly in Maine. She is a wonderful boat and in great shape. I need not ever think of another. She is a great cruising boat, unlike any other I have ever seen.

This coming fall, I am hoping to sail her to Charleston, S.C. through the intercoastal.

I have seen several Gale Forces over the years: one in Maine just returned from acruise to Greenland and Norway, one that lives near Boothbay, one that use to berth in Old Saybrook, CT and one from Annapolis that visited Maine last summer.

Give me news of you and your boat to Edwin.S.Matthews@bakernet.com. Best regards, Edwin Matthews

I am seriously looking at purchasing a Gale Force. Can any owners tell me about any caveats or negatives to anticipate as I search and inspect? For instance, the tilting salon ports struck me as a potential problem in a seaway- as opposed to the round bronze pair on some of the boats. Is that an issue? How is the steering tab in real life? Have any of you made significant improvements over the years? Thanks for any info you can offer.

THE KAISER GALE FORCE IS AN UNUSUALLY WELL THOUGHT OUT, AS WELL AS AN VERY WELL-BUILT, 34' CRUISING CUTTER BUILT FOR SERIOUS OFF-SHORE PASSAGES. 30 SOME WERE BUILT IN DELAWARE IN THE 70'S AND 80'S.
