Self-Steering and Emergency Rudder Systems
Self-Steering Types:
- Windvane - A mechanical arm that uses changes in wind direction on the vane to adjust the rudder, steering the boat relative to wind direction.
- Sheet to Tiller - A system of lines, elastic and blocks that is tied to either the mainsail, or jib, or both, and uses changes in wind pressure on the sails, transmitting the resulting changes in tension on the main and jibsheets to the rudder, relative to wind direction.
- Autopilot - An electric motor actuated by a compass to adjust rudder direction relative to a compass heading.
