Keep stirring the oatmeal to avoid scorching.

I like my new ladle!

I removed 1/4 of the grain and boiled it for 30 minutes, returned to the mash tun and got only 149F in the mash tun. My goal was 158F, so I removed another 1/4 of the grains and boiled them, then returned them to reach 159F.

The temperature of the mash in the mash tun had dropped to 144F before adding the second decoction at boiling temperatures. I must not have taken enough grain in the decoction, it did not raise the temperature up enough. Next time I will use 1/3 of the grains in the second decoction.

The mash is then rested for one hour. My rest began at 2:48. There is lots of time to do other things while decoction mashing, it is pretty relaxed. The timing of the mashes is pretty flexible too.
